Documents required for postgraduate study abroad
For Pakistani applicants to a Masters, MPhil or PhD abroad. The academic file is heavier than at undergraduate level and HEC attestation of your degree is the step that takes longest — start it before you have chosen your universities.
Academic documents
HEC first- Bachelor's degree certificateHEC-attested. Confirm your institution and programme appear on the HEC recognised list before booking the appointment.
- Complete bachelor's transcriptsEvery semester or year, with the grading scale printed or attached. Universities abroad need the scale to convert your CGPA.
- Masters degree and transcriptsIf you already hold one — commonly the document that makes a 2-year bachelor's acceptable.
- Provisional certificateIf your degree has not yet been issued. Accepted at application stage, not at enrolment.
- Matric and FSc certificatesStill requested by many universities and by most visa sections, so keep them attested too.
- Degree equivalenceWhere a specific university asks for it. Many do not, and paying for one unprompted is a common wasted expense.
Written and professional documents
- Statement of purposeThe most heavily weighted document in a postgraduate application. It should connect your bachelor's work to this specific programme, not to the country.
- Research proposalFor MPhil, PhD and research Masters. Two to ten pages depending on the university, with a clear question and a method.
- Two academic referencesFrom supervisors who taught or supervised you, on institutional letterhead with official email addresses.
- Professional referenceWhere relevant, from a line manager. Necessary for MBA and most management programmes.
- CVAcademic format for research degrees: education, research, publications, conferences, teaching. Professional format for taught Masters.
- Experience lettersOn company letterhead, stating role, dates and responsibilities. Essential for MBA applications.
- PublicationsFull citations and links or PDFs where you have them. A significant advantage for PhD applications.
Tests, identity and finance
- English test resultMasters entry is typically IELTS 6.5, often with a minimum in each band. Check the band minimums, not just the overall score.
- GRE or GMATRequired by many US programmes and some European ones. Increasingly optional, but a strong score still helps funding applications.
- PassportValid six months beyond entry, with the name matching your degree certificate exactly.
- Financial evidenceFirst-year tuition plus living costs. Country-specific rules apply — see the relevant country page.
- Scholarship or funding lettersIf you hold an assistantship, HEC scholarship or employer sponsorship, this reduces the funds you must prove.
Start HEC attestation before you shortlist universities. It is the longest step in a postgraduate file and it is the one that
can fail outright if your institution is not recognised. Everything else can be assembled in parallel; this cannot be rushed at the end.

Postgraduate documents — common questions
5 answersWhat documents are required for a Masters abroad from Pakistan?
An HEC-attested bachelor's degree and complete transcripts, an English test result, a statement of purpose, two academic or professional references, a CV, your passport, and financial evidence for the first year. Research degrees add a research proposal and usually a supervisor's expression of interest.
Is a 2-year Pakistani bachelor's degree enough for a Masters abroad?
Usually not on its own. Most UK, Australian and Canadian universities treat a 2-year BA or BSc as below an honours degree and require either a Pakistani Masters on top of it, or a pre-Masters programme. The United States often accepts a 2-year bachelor's plus a 2-year Masters as equivalent to a US bachelor's. If you hold a 2-year degree, check this before anything else — it determines your whole plan.
Do I need work experience for a Masters application?
For most academic Masters, no. For MBA and many management programmes, yes — typically two to three years, evidenced by experience letters on company letterhead stating your role, dates and responsibilities. Some professional Masters in public health and education also expect relevant experience.
How recent do my reference letters need to be?
Within the last year is the norm. If you graduated several years ago and cannot reach your former supervisors, a professional reference from a current employer is acceptable at most universities, though a fully academic pair is stronger for research degrees.
What is needed for a PhD application specifically?
Everything on the Masters list, plus a research proposal, a full academic CV listing any publications or conference work, and in most cases prior contact with a potential supervisor. For funded positions in Europe the supervisor's support usually matters more than the formal application, so approach them early with a focused proposal rather than a generic email.
