Documents required for undergraduate study abroad
If you are applying after Matric and FSc, after A-Levels, or with a DAE diploma, this is the file to assemble. Collect it in this order and you can apply and attest in parallel rather than one after the other.
Academic documents
Attest these first- Matriculation certificate and marksheetAttested by your BISE board, then IBCC. Both the certificate and the detailed marks certificate.
- FSc / HSSC certificate and marksheetSame chain. If your result is pending, a provisional certificate from the board is accepted at application stage.
- O-Level and A-Level statements of resultIf you took Cambridge or Edexcel qualifications instead. Add an IBCC equivalence certificate if a university or a Pakistani institution asks for one.
- DAE diploma and transcriptIf applying from a technical route. Attested by the relevant Board of Technical Education, then IBCC.
- School leaving certificateRequested by some universities and by several embassies to confirm your dates of study.
- Character certificateFrom your last institution. Required by a minority of universities, quick to obtain, worth having ready.
English and identity
- IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or Duolingo resultCheck both the university requirement and the visa requirement — they differ, and the higher one applies. See our English test guide.
- PassportValid at least six months beyond entry. Check that your name matches your academic certificates exactly, including middle names.
- Passport photographsSpecifications differ by country. The UK, USA and Schengen each have their own size and background rules.
- CNIC or B-FormYour own, and your parents' CNICs where a parent is sponsoring you.
Name mismatches stop applications. If your matric certificate says one name and your passport another, fix it at the issuing
board before you apply anywhere. Correcting it after an offer has been issued means reissuing the offer, the CAS or I-20, and often missing the intake.
Financial documents
Country-specific- Bank statementsUsually six months. The UK requires the funds held for 28 consecutive days; Australia and Canada assess the source and history.
- Bank maintenance certificateA letter from the bank confirming the balance and the account holder, on bank letterhead, recently dated.
- Sponsor affidavit of supportWhere a parent or relative is funding you. Sworn, stamped, and accompanied by the sponsor's own financial evidence.
- Sponsor income evidenceSalary slips, tax returns, business registration or rental agreements. The balance must be consistent with the declared income.
- Blocked account confirmationGermany only. Opened with an approved provider before the visa appointment.
- Property or asset documentsOptional but useful where a large balance needs a documented origin, such as a recent land sale.
Written documents
- Statement of purposeWhy this course, why this country, what you intend afterwards. Australia assesses it formally under the Genuine Student requirement.
- Reference lettersOne or two from teachers or your principal, on letterhead, with official contact details.
- CVRequired less often at undergraduate level, but useful where you have work experience, volunteering or competitions to show.

Undergraduate documents — common questions
5 answersWhat documents do I need to study abroad after FSc?
Attested matric and FSc certificates with complete marksheets, a passport valid for at least six months, an English test result, financial evidence covering your first year, passport photographs, a statement of purpose and usually one or two school references. If you sat A-Levels instead, your statements of result and certificates replace the FSc documents.
Can I apply abroad before my FSc result is announced?
Yes. Universities in the UK, Canada and Australia routinely issue conditional offers on the basis of your first-year FSc result and your matric marks, with the offer becoming unconditional when the final result arrives. Applying early is an advantage, not a risk.
Is a DAE diploma accepted for study abroad?
In several countries, yes. A three-year DAE is commonly accepted for entry to a related engineering or computing bachelor's degree in Canada, Australia and parts of the UK, sometimes with credit for the first year. Germany and the United States are less consistent about it. The acceptance depends on the individual university, so it needs checking course by course.
How much bank balance is needed for an undergraduate student visa?
It depends entirely on the country: the UK sets a published per-month figure, Canada and Australia set an annual living-cost figure, Germany requires a fixed blocked-account sum, and the USA works from the figure printed on your I-20. Each country page on this site gives the current number. What all of them share is that the source of the money is scrutinised as closely as the amount.
Do I need reference letters for undergraduate applications?
Usually one or two from teachers or your principal. They should be on school or college letterhead, signed, and carry the referee's official email address — a reference from a personal Gmail account raises questions. The USA places more weight on these than most other destinations.
